Barrett writes speculative fiction with a tendency toward the weird and macabre.

She received an honorable mention in the 2016 Writer’s Digest Popular Fiction Short Story competition in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Category.

In 2015, she was awarded first place in police/crime/court coverage by the New York Press Association for her January 2014 Ithaca Times cover story on the City of Ithaca’s contract negotiations with the police union. Barrett’s freelance journalism focuses on issues of social justice and inequality through the complex intersections of class, race, gender and sexuality.

Barrett built a house in the woods, with her craftsman partner, from trees they felled, milled and raised by themselves.

Barrett earned a BA in Creative Writing from Wells College and MA in Social and Political Philosophy from Binghamton University.
